Choosing your Wedding Suit

Choosing your Wedding Suit

17 April 2024

Choosing the perfect suit

The Groom’s suit on the Wedding Day, is just as important and the Brides dress, and there are a fair number of considerations to be made! You’ll want your Wedding Day suit to make you feel your best, so choose one that not only compliments your Wedding style and theme, but one that also reflects your own personal style and personality. But remember the cardinal rule: your suit needs to fit properly and be comfortable. So here are some ideas, considerations and tips to choosing the perfect suit for your Wedding Day.

Think about the formality of your Wedding- you’ll want the style of your suit to compliment the style, colour and overall vibe of your Wedding. So, consider a suit, tails or a tuxedo- if your Wedding is black tie, you’ll definitely need a tux. Have some Scottish heritage? Why not consider wearing a kilt?!

Consider the season that you’ll be getting married in- for Autumn and Winter Weddings, you can afford to have a heavier fabric for your suit- in fact it’ll be perfect to keep you warm on a cold Winter’s day. You may even want to consider some tweed or velvet if your Wedding style permits. However, for Spring and Summer, you’ll want to consider a lighter fabric such as a light-weight wool, cotton or linen, particularly if you’re having a less formal affair.

The cut of your suit will be completely personal choice, but your suit shop will be able to give you advice on the best fit for your size and build and to suit your Wedding style. You’ll also need to consider if you want a single or double breasted jacket- generally single breasted jackets are more versatile and more flattering.

2 piece or 3 piece?- wearing a waistcoat with a suit will always add another touch of class, and on one of the biggest days of your life, why wouldn’t you?! 2 piece suits, are however the cooler option, so if you’re getting married abroad or in the peak of Summer, a 2-piece suit may be the best option for you.

When you’re looking at the colour of your Wedding suit, take into account the season- generally darker suits for the Winter months and lighter tones for the summer season. But you’re also going to want to consider your Wedding colour scheme, to make sure that your choice of suit doesn’t clash with your Wedding aesthetic. Darker suits are generally more formal and easier to coordinate with other colours (think shirts, ties, cravats and pocket squares), but don’t work so well for less formal occasions. You may also want to opt for a pattern to your suit fabric, whether that’s a pin-stripe, tweed, all-out floral design or a simple plain fabric.

You’ll need to check which style of shirt best matches your suit design, taking into account the collar and cuff details. The style of tie that you want to wear, will also help to determine what style of shirt you choose. Again, think about the colour and pattern to compliment your Wedding style and theme.

To hire or to buy?- its always a good idea for a man to have a go-to suit, so depending on the style you choose, and the versatility of the suit post-Wedding, you may want to consider buying your suit. You’ll get to wear it again and again and will always be reminded of the most special day of your life! Budget is however a big factor when considering whether to hire or to buy, particularly if you’re looking for a bespoke or tailored suit, but a good suit doesn’t need to cost the earth and there is one out there to suit every style and budget. Hiring is also a great option if you want to go for something a little different that you wouldn’t normally wear, and you’re unlikely to wear again. Bright colours and loud patters could be the perfect fit for your Wedding, but you may not necessarily see yourself in it again- which is when hiring can be a great option.

And if you’re just not really a suit person, but want to dress up for the biggest day of your life(!), there are some great options available for a more relaxed style and greater comfort. Performance suits can give you a little extra stretch, allowing you added comfort when a suit is called for, whilst keeping the style and formality of the day.

Accessorising your suit

Accessorising your suit is the perfect way to personalise your Wedding Day attire and to put a little personality into what you want to wear. Give a thought to what your accessory preferences are and whether they fit with the style of your suit- then have some fun! Here is my round-up of the best Grooms accessories for your Wedding Day.

A tie, cravat or bow tie- this will probably be the main accessory that your guests will notice. You want to be classy and understated, but still in tune with your Wedding style and colour scheme.

A belt- The style of suit that you opt for will determine if you can wear a belt- you can’t wear a belt with a tuxedo or morning suit. If you do choose to wear a belt on your Wedding Day, choose one that’s good quality and matches the colour of your shoes. But the key is to ensure that your suit is well fitted for the day- meaning you may choose to not wear a belt at all!

Braces and suspenders- are a dashing addition and can be as fun or functional as you like.

A watch- an elegant dress watch will complete the look. If you’re purchasing a watch for the occasion, ensure it matches the style and colour of your suit and keep it simple and unadorned. Make sure it’s slim too, so that it fits well under your cuffs. For a sense of daytime formality, pair your morning suit with a pocket watch, to tuck into your waist coat pocket- very dapper!

Jewellery- if you’re a jewellery lover accessorise your Wedding day look with your favourite pieces- maybe even treat yourself to some new items, or gift each other your Wedding Day jewellery.

A pocket square- the perfect splash of colour to compliment your Wedding colour scheme. Keep the fabric and colour in keeping with your overall style to complete the suit rather than detract. Having a Summer Wedding with a floral vibe? Why not opt for a floral design?

Cufflinks will complete your Wedding suit- keep them discreet and complimentary to the overall colour of your suit.

Tie pin- not always required and very much a personal preference, but could add a little something special to your suit.

Socks! I’m a huge fan of funky socks! Add a little extra personality to your Wedding day outfit, without being too OTT! A splash of colour and a jazzy pattern can be a great, fun addition to your Wedding wardrobe!

A hat- whether that’s a top hat, flat cap, bowler, boater or fedora, a hat may just be what you’re looking for to compliment your Wedding Day look. A particularly great addition to a relaxed summer wedding to keep the rays at bay.

A cane- certainly reserved for more formal affairs… but on your Wedding Day, why not?!

Shoes- the colour of your Wedding shoes will need to compliment the colour of your suit. Usually black or brown are the most popular colours, but it really is personal choice. If you’re buying new shoes, make sure you wear them in- you’ll be wearing your shoes all day, you want to be comfortable on your Wedding Day!

The button hole- the prized possession of any Wedding Day suit- your button whole should make your stand out as the Groom, reflect a little personality and compliment the Wedding floral designs. Position your button hole in the middle of your lapel, covering the stitched button hole. Pin from behind the lapel and be sure not to leave any sharp ends exposed!
