Your photos are the one thing from your Wedding Day that you will keep for ever and look back on, time and time again. They will provoke the memories of your big day and help you relive the moments for years to come. Your photographers and videographers will be one of the suppliers, that you’ll be spending the most time with throughout your Wedding Day. You need to feel completely comfortable with them and trust them implicitly to capture the very best of your Wedding Day. Be sure that your photographer understands your vision and can capture the style of photos that you’re looking for.

The best way to discover the perfect Photographers and Videographers for you, is to meet them! Talk to them, explain your ideas, make sure you understand each other and feel relaxed with one another. And if you can, arrange an engagement or pre-wedding shoot, to really understand their style, be sure you get along and have a practice in front of the camera!

Photography Styles

When you’re choosing your Wedding Photographer, think about the style of photos you’re looking for in your Wedding album.

If you prefer candid photos, capturing the moment without the posing, you’ll want to look for a photographer with a reportage style.

If you’re looking for traditional photography, with conventional, posed photos that are beautifully placed and perfectly lit, you’ll want to find a photographer that captures this style.

If you want fashion focussed reportage, then a contemporary photographer will be able to create the vision of your day.

You’ll probably find that it’s great to have a combination of all of these styles to capture every element of your day and the very best of your Wedding.

The Shot List

Your Wedding Day has arrived and you want to make sure that you capture every precious moment. I’ve put together a few ideas for the “not to be missed” photos, to capture during your Wedding Day.

But for more inspiration to help you relive your Wedding Day for years to come, download your copy of my Wedding Day Shot List! (Scroll to the bottom of this page and enter your details to receive your free download).

  • The knockout couple shot
  • Potentially the most important image of the day… the one that your photographer captures, at the most exquisite time of day, creating magic with the light. THE shot of the two of you that will capture the perfect moment forever.

  • The group shots
  • Perfectly posed and beautifully lit, they no longer have to be awkward and forced. Group photos can be fun and entertaining too. It’s great to have a selection of group shots to capture your Wedding party and important guests being part of your special day.

  • The details and the Moments
  • These are the personal shots that are in the moment, beautiful and capture the essence of the day. They will record the tears, the laughs, the dancing until you can stand no longer… as well as everything in between! You’ll want the detail of your careful planning as well as the joy of the day to remember for years to come. Capture a combination of close-up details, favours, bouquets, buttonholes, and of course the dress, as well as whole room shots and photos of your guests to catch the atmosphere of the day.

Happy Photographers & Videographers

A happy photographer takes the very best photos! So here are some tips to keep your Photographers and Videographers on top form, to capture those golden shots of your Wedding Day!

  • Feed your Photographer!... no one wants a hangry photographer/videographer! And if you’re unable to provide food, let them know in advance so they can bring something with them.
  • Don’t forget to let them have a break too. During the Wedding Breakfast is a great time… most people don’t want too many photos of themselves with a mouthful of food!
  • Give your photographer a shot list- let them know the essential photos that you want them to capture.
  • Give your photographer/videographer some background on the important people, i.e. if there are any specific family set-ups they need to be aware of, or if anyone is particularly camera shy.
  • Let them know how you feel about having your photo taken- for example if you’re a little shy in front of the camera yourself, if you prefer a certain side, if you don’t like kissing photos or PDA makes you feel awkward.
  • Make sure your photographer/videographer is aware of the style of images that you’re looking for- whether it’s candid photos where the photographers disappear, or if you prefer a more traditional approach with arranged portraits.
  • Keep the backgrounds tidy, particularly in your getting ready photos- the best way to help your photographer capture the most beautiful photographs is without a fussy, messy background!
  • Consider a phone free ceremony… guests holding mobiles as you walk down the aisle detracts from your professional photos. Ask your guests to leave it to the pros!

Essential Questions for your photographer

When you meet your Wedding Photographers & Videographers it’s essential to have a list of questions at the ready, to help you understand their style, to find out more about how they work and most importantly to help you get a feel if you’re a good fit for each other. Your photographer is one supplier that you’ll be spending most of your day with… so you need to get along!

Here are my top 5 questions to ask your photographers & videographers, but for a full list (in a handy downloadable PDF!) head to the bottom of this page, to grab your free copy.

  1. Ask to see some of their previous work

Looking through a whole wedding album that they have shot themselves, will help you to understand how the photographer will take a range of photos throughout the day, in different settings, with different light and different group sizes. It also helps you see the consistency of photography quality throughout the day.

Ask them what their favourite photograph is- you’ll learn a lot about the photographer, their vision and their personality by the way they answer.

  2. Have you worked at the venue before?

Though not essential, it’s useful for them to know the best places to take photos, how the light works at the venue, sunset angles and alternative options should the weather take a turn for the worse. If they haven’t been before, suggest they take a visit or better still arrange a Pre-Wedding shoot at the venue.

  3. What packages do you offer?

This will help you to understand the cost of the Photographer/Videographer, the amount of time they will be with you, what they would normally expect to cover, payment options, additional shooter options etc.... generally what’s included. It’s also worth covering at this point whether a contract will be signed between yourselves and the Photographer/Videographer- this makes expectations from both sides clear and covers you both, should anything happen.

  4. Do you have insurance?

Some venues require this to allow the photographer/videographer to work on site. It also covers you if anything should go wrong with their equipment etc.

  5. Are you available?

It sounds obvious, but you don’t want to be captivated by a Photographer that isn’t available on your Wedding Day! It’s worth checking up-front, to not waste any time.

With special thanks again to DC Media for their contribution.
