There is an undeniable magic in the confetti throw. It is the moment where the formality of the ceremony breaks into pure, unadulterated joy. Whether you choose traditional biodegradable paper or natural petals, the confetti shot is often the most framed photo of the entire day.

However, a "spontaneous" confetti moment actually requires a bit of logistical planning. Here is my guide to ensuring your celebration shower is picture-perfect.

The Logistics of the Toss

• Venue Rules First: Before you fall in love with a specific petal, check your venue’s policy. Most now strictly require 100% biodegradable options, and some may have designated "confetti zones" to protect their grounds.
• Sustainability is Key: Avoid plastic or non-biodegradable options at all costs. Not only are they environmentally harmful, but many venues will issue a cleaning fee if they are used.
• The "Fall Rate": This is where the physics comes in! Small petals tend to disappear in photos or fall too quickly. For the best "slow-motion" effect, opt for larger petals or lightweight biodegradable paper. They catch the air beautifully, giving your photographer more time to capture the magic.
• Colour Strategy: Match your confetti to your wedding palette, but avoid colours that are too pale (like white or cream), as they can get lost against a bright sky or a white dress. Aim for a pop of contrast!

Planning the Moment

• Timing the Joy: My favourite moments for the throw are the ceremony recessional, the grand exit from the church, or even a choreographed "confetti first dance." Look at your schedule to see where a burst of energy fits best.
• The "Tunnel" vs. The "Cloud": Decide if you want your guests in a traditional formal line (the tunnel) or surrounding you in a joyful huddle (the cloud). Both look fantastic, but your wedding coordinator can help direct guests so no one is left standing in the back!
• Quantity is Everything: The biggest mistake? Not having enough. I recommend at least two large handfuls per guest. When it comes to confetti, more is always more.

Advice for the Couple (and your Guests!)

• For the Guests: Remind them to throw up and over, not at you. You want a canopy of colour falling down, not a petal to the eye!
• For the Couple: Take it slow. Don't rush through the tunnel. Keep your heads up, look at each other (or your cheering guests), and breathe it in. This is your "just married" moment!
