Choosing the Perfect Dress

Choosing the Perfect Dress

14 April 2024

Dress shopping

Dress shopping is perhaps one of (if not the!) most exciting part of Wedding Planning. Give yourself the chance to have a little (or maybe a lot!) of fun and visit several boutiques to try on plenty of dresses (you only get to do this once, right!), but don’t be overwhelmed with too much choice!

Think about not only your personality, but also the style and theme of your Wedding as well as the season that you’ll be getting married in- let these elements guide you with the style of your dress. Plain satin, lace, or floaty chiffon? Poofy ball gown or sheath dress? Sleeves, or no sleeves? Floor length, or tea length? White, ivory or champagne… or a colour to compliment your Wedding theme & colour scheme?!... there are so many options to consider! Let your Bridal shop guide you to the best dress options for you, your style and your budget.

Comfort is definitely a factor for consideration too, especially if you plan to wear your dress all day- choose a dress that looks amazing, but feels comfortable too (you’ll need to be able to sit, eat and dance in it!). For a little extra something, consider a two in one look. With detachable jackets, skirts or trains you can create a whole new look from day to evening- all with one dress!

Take your nearest and dearest with you, to have some fun whilst you’re dress shopping, but limit the numbers- too many opinions aren’t always helpful!

But ultimately, enjoy yourself, whilst you’re searching for your perfect dress. Go with what feels right- and when you get the tingly, goosebump feeling… that’s the one!

Accessories

Accessories are the perfect way to personalise your Wedding dress and with so many options to choose from, you can “finish” your dress in your own unique way.

The style of your dress will help you to decide what (if any) accessories you’ll need, but here are some ideas of things to include in your Wedding Day look.

A Veil- what Wedding look isn’t complete without a veil? I’m a big fan- mostly on the basis that you’ll probably only get the opportunity wear one, once in your life! But with a variety of lengths, and designs, there’s usually one out there to suit every style of dress. I’m also in love with a floral embroidered cathedral length veil- just perfect for a Spring or Summer Wedding!

Wraps, stoles and jackets- the perfect addition for an Autumn, Winter or early Spring Wedding, to keep away the chill but maintain your style! Whether you choose faux fur, lace, wool, chiffon, denim or leather, you can create a 2-in-1 look and transform your outfit from day to evening.

Capes are growing once again in popularity, and could perform a similar function to a jacket or a wrap, depending on the fabric and style… but with an added wow!

Sashes and belts don’t suit every style of dress, so it really will depend on the shape and style of dress that you choose, but on the right gown, it can just finish the look… also, adding an accent to your waistline can have the most tremendous effect on your silhouette!

Mrs P. chose an ivory, lace, strapless, fishtail gown for her Wedding at @Vaulty Manor. She chose to accessorise with a beautiful lace jacket, diamante belt and cathedral length veil. She topped it off with diamond accessories to accentuate the sparkles of her gown and beautiful ivory brocade shoes with blue accents! - Camellio Wedding Planning and Events - Essex Wedding Planner

Tiaras and hairpieces are another personal preference and will need to fit with the style of your gown- whether you choose an understated tiara, sparkly hair vine or a full-on floral crown, the right headpiece can accentuate the vibe of your outfit and compliment your Wedding style.

Jewellery- no outfit is complete without the right jewellery- and the same goes for your Wedding Day gown. Whether you choose an heirloom piece for “something old” or treat yourself for the special occasion, choose your jewellery to accentuate and compliment your dress and not detract.

Shoes, shoes, shoes! Every girl’s best friend. You can have so much fun with your choice of shoes! If you have a full-length gown, chances are your shoes will be hidden most of the time, so it’s a great opportunity to add a flash of colour- and if you’re feeling bold with a tea-length dress, then why not go for it! Choose a colour that compliments your Wedding colour scheme, or even make them your something blue. Just remember you’ll probably be wanting to spend all day in your shoes, so don’t make them too tall and make sure they’re comfy. Choose your shoes ahead of your dress fitting and take them with you, to make sure your dress is the right length. Have a spare pair on hand should you need some evening relief... and just in case the weather takes a turn for the worse.

And don’t forget your underwear. The dress you choose will help you to determine what the best underwear will be, to hold everything in the right place without detracting from your dress. Just remember to take your underwear to your fittings, so your dress can be altered to fit perfectly, with the right underwear too!

Top Tips from the experts at Martels Bridal Boutique

Here are some top tips to shopping for your Wedding outfit, compiled with the kind help of the experts at Martels Bridal Boutique.

  • Shop early- then there’s not so much pressure or need to rush into any decisions. Give yourself plenty of time to find the perfect outfit! Add a little extra time, if you’re looking to have something bespoke or tailor made.
  • Get measured by you dress or suit shop to ensure you get the perfect fit. You’ll want to be remeasured and have fittings a few months before your Wedding and on the lead up to ensure you have the perfect fit on the day- this will either give your seamstress/tailor the time to make the necessary adjustments or, if you’re hiring, for alternative sizes to be ordered.
  • Always keep an open mind about shapes and styles- 9 out of 10 Brides go for something completely different to the dress they imagined themselves in!
  • Keep your venue, style and theme in mind- you want your outfit to compliment and not to clash. If you're getting married abroad, consider the size and weight of the dress, not only to wear but to travel with!
  • If you’re looking for a specialist style, research your shops in advance to find ones that stock what you’re looking for. If you can’t find one, consider going bespoke!
  • Work out your budget early on- the perfect outfit isn’t necessarily the most expensive. Don't forgeth to factor in the cost of alterations- most dresses will need fitting to your size and shape.
  • Wear your shoes and underwear to your fittings and take your accessories along to give you an idea of the final look.
  • Never let anyone pressure you into a purchase that you’re not comfortable with, whether that’s a family member, friend or the shop that you happen to be visiting!
  • Most of all…. Have fun!
What to do with your dress after your Wedding - Camellio Wedding Planning and Events - Essex Wedding Planner

What to do with your dress after your Wedding

If you're like me, your Wedding Dress will hang in your wardrobe after your Wedding Day, destined to never be worn again... such a shame for a beautiful dress that took so much time, effort and expense to choose! Instead, why not do something speacial with you Wedding Dress after you've enjoyed wearing it for your big day. Here are just a few of my favourite ideas of what you could do with your Wedding Dress, after your Wedding!

  • Preserve your dress- firstly get it professionally cleaned, then store it correctly. The right storage will depend on your style of dress, but often involves wrapping in acid-free materials.
  • Sell your dress- an eco-way to get more use from your dress- that’s kind to your purse too!
  • Donate your dress to charity- let someone else enjoy your dress, whilst giving to charity at the same time!
  • Alter your dress to make it suitable for other occasions or turn it into a completely different piece of clothing! For example, make the skirt smaller, remove the train or shorten the skirt, to give you a more practical and versatile dress.
  • Dye your dress- ready to coordinate for your next occasion!
  • Get crafty with some home décor ideas or even make a soft toy for your children!
  • Make your dress into your children’s christening or communion dress.
  • Have a post Wedding photoshoot- where if doesn’t matter so much if your dress gets ruined! Have some fun in the woods or on the beach… the world is your oyster. You can capture those Vogue style shots, without worrying about wrecking your dress!
  • Host a Wedding Dress party!
  • Have it framed and hang it on the wall for the perfect reminder of a fantastic day!
