Who’s Who & What Do They Do? Your Guide to Elegant Wedding Party Roles
Who’s Who & What Do They Do? Your Guide to Elegant Wedding Party Roles
10 March 2024, Update July 2026

Selecting your wedding party and assigning roles to your nearest and dearest is one of the most exciting tasks at the start of your wedding planning journey. Your wedding party is the inner circle of people chosen to support you both in the lead-up to and on the big day itself.

While these roles traditionally come with specific responsibilities, remember: all of these roles are completely optional. Modern, sophisticated weddings are all about doing it your way. You can swap traditional roles, mix up your wedding party, or keep it entirely minimalist.

To help you play to your loved ones' strengths, here is a complete breakdown of classic wedding party roles and what they entail.

The Bridal Party Roles

Maid of Honour / Chief Bridesmaid / Man of Honour

The bride’s ultimate right-hand person. Traditionally given to a closest friend or sibling, this role carries significant responsibility. The Maid of Honour offers consistent emotional and practical support throughout the planning journey and ensures the bride feels calm and entirely taken care of on the morning of the wedding. From dress fittings and planning an elegant hen celebration to fixing the train or holding the bouquet during the ceremony, they are there every step of the way.

Bridesmaids / Brides-Mates / Brides-Men

Usually composed of close friends or relatives, bridesmaids support the bride and help the Maid of Honour coordinate pre-wedding events. On the day itself, they walk down the aisle ahead of the bride, assist with guest transitions, and ensure the bridal preparation suite remains a joyful, relaxed space. While the number you choose is entirely up to you, a group of two to four is most common for a balanced, elegant aesthetic.

The Groom’s Party Roles

The Best Man / Best Woman

The groom’s primary pillar of support. Often a brother, sister, or best friend, they serve many of the same supportive duties as the Maid of Honour. The Best Man assists with suit fittings, helps manage the groom's morning timeline to ensure he arrives looking dapper and on time, and safely guards the rings before the ceremony. At the reception, they are traditionally tasked with delivering a memorable, engaging speech!

Groomsmen / Grooms-Women / Ushers

Groomsmen and ushers are there to support the groom's morning timeline and assist with light guest hosting as the ceremony begins. Their primary duties include greeting arriving guests, handing out order-of-service booklets, and helping guide people to their seats. They can also provide a helpful hand during the drinks reception by identifying family members for group portraits.

An Elegant Note on Day-of Logistics: While your groomsmen are there to help welcome your guests, they shouldn't be managing your wedding timeline, coordinating arrival delays, or directing external suppliers. To ensure your closest friends can fully celebrate alongside you without the stress of managing the day, delegating the heavy logistics to a professional is essential. The Younger Roles & Special Duties

Flower Girls, Page Boys, and Ring Bearers

Including the younger generation is a wonderful way to bring a sense of family and joy to your ceremony.

  • Flower Girls & Page Boys: Traditionally walk down the aisle ahead of the bride, looking adorable and setting a beautifully classic tone for the processional.
  • Ring Bearers: Entrusted with presenting the wedding bands during the ceremony. Because this is a major responsibility, many couples choose a trusted adult (like the Best Man) or ensure a younger child has an adult close by to assist them.

The Parents of the Couple

  • The Mother of the Bride: A beautiful source of support who often helps the bride prepare on the morning of the wedding and shares in the intimate moments of getting ready.
  • The Father of the Bride: Traditionally walks the bride down the aisle, shares a meaningful father-daughter dance at the reception, and delivers a heartfelt welcome speech.
  • The Parents of the Groom: On hand throughout the planning process to offer a guiding hand, celebrate the joining of the two families, and welcome guests to the celebration.

People Also Ask (FAQs)

Do you have to have a traditional wedding party?

No. All wedding party roles are entirely optional and rooted in tradition. Many modern couples choose to have a highly minimalist wedding party or skip the roles entirely to focus solely on a streamlined, intimate guest experience.

What is the difference between a groomsman and an usher?

While the roles are frequently combined today, traditionally a groomsman stands with the groom at the altar and focuses on supporting him directly. An usher's primary responsibility is guest logistics, such as greeting guests, managing seating arrangements, and directing people throughout the venue.

Who stands with the groom if he has a female best friend?

A groom can absolutely choose a female best friend or sister to be his "Best Woman" or "Grooms-woman." Modern weddings prioritise having your closest loved ones by your side, regardless of gender or traditional titles.
