What are wedding vows?

Wedding vows, in simple terms, are a public declaration of your love and commitment to one another.

The vows you take, will likely differ depending on the setting of your wedding- for example if you are being married in a church, you will repeat the vows spoken by millions of couples over the last centuries- these vows cannot be changed or rewritten and are unique to the Church.

If, however you choose to a registry wedding at your selected venue, you will have the opportunity to choose your vows from several options, giving a little more personalisation to your wedding Ceremony.

With each of these options, although you must follow a standardised set of vows (for legal reasons), you have the opportunity to express more personal sentiments to your partner through readings, poems or special messages, said in addition to your vows.

Sadly, Celebrant-led weddings are not yet legally binding, and a legal marriage will still be required to complete your marriage.

Top tips for writing your wedding vows

1. Choose the right type of vows for you- whether it’s “repeat after me” vows; stand alone, “I Do” vows; unity vows; community vows; or truly personal vows written entirely by you.
2. Write from the heart and say them with intention- the power and emotion is amazing to witness.
3. Think about the Why- why do you want to exchange personal vows? What will it mean to say them and to hear them? Holding this thought in your mind will give you focus and clarity about what you really want to say.
4. Agree on the length and tone together- you want each of your vows to be a similar length- a minute or two each is perfect. Go for a tone that feels comfortable to you both and helps you to express what you want to say, in a way that’s natural to you.
5. Gather your ideas, then whittle them down- gather ideas from all around you, then give yourself time to sort through your ideas, collect the ones that mean the most and write your vows.
6. Base your vows on the values that you share. Speak honestly about what your commitment means to you.
7. Create a structure- a beginning, a middle and an end. It will help your vows to flow.
8. Practise! Read them aloud- check that the words you have used feel natural. Does it create the emotion that you want it to, and feel right when you say it?
