Although one of the smaller details to think about in your wedding planning, your wedding day transport is super important to make sure you arrive on time! It’s also something that you shouldn’t leave to the last minute. Vintage and classic cars continue to be a hugely popular option, but with so many options to choose from, you needn’t be satisfied with a Rolls Royce or Limo!
Who Needs Transportation?
One of the first considerations when you’re planning your wedding day transport, is who will need transporting? Naturally, you and your partner will need to get to and from your ceremony and reception. If your wedding party will be with you whilst you’re getting ready, you’ll need transport for them too.
Providing transport for your guests is also a great idea, if budget allows, particularly if your day is spread across multiple locations. It’s the perfect way to make sure everyone turns up on time… and prevent any stragglers between the ceremony and reception! It’s particularly appreciated by anyone who doesn’t live locally, and ideal for destination weddings, to take away any stress for your guests on the day. Buses are the best option to transport all of your guest together and can be great fun on board too! Consider how many people you need to transport to better understand the type of transportation you’ll need.
When will you need your transport?
This will largely depend on where your ceremony and reception are taking place. The most common times for needing transportation is first thing, for the arrival at your wedding ceremony- particularly if you’re getting married at a venue different from your reception, for example one of Essex’s beautiful churches, and then again to reach your reception venue. You may want to organise some transport for later in the day to help you and your guests either go to an after party or to local hotels for the night. So, a mode of transport may be required throughout the day- whether that’s one method or multiple modes is entirely up to you!
Remember too, that the bride and groom will usually arrive separately- so it’s up to you whether the same mode of transport is used (if you’re not too far away) or if you’d prefer two different methods of transport to suit your personal preferences!
Transport to fit your theme
Your wedding transport may be the first time your guests get a glimpse of you on your Wedding Day, so think about what mode of transport you want to use and let it reflect your Wedding style and theme. Here are a few suggestions to help tie your transport with your Wedding aesthetic.
For an urban London wedding – you couldn’t possibly use anything other than a Routemaster Bus or a London Black Cab. If your uber trendy, why not hire a scooter!
For mid-century elegance- you can’t beat a classic Rolls Royce at a Wedding for some vintage glamour.
For 60’s inspired summer vibes- Why not arrive on a vintage Vespa!
For the eco-conscious couples- if it’s not too far, then why not just walk! But if you’re feeling a little more adventurous, try a vintage bicycle for some cute and romantic photos!
For a country farmhouse or field wedding- try a tractor to take you from the church to your reception. Hook up a trailer to transport your guests too!
For classic boho chic- your wedding wouldn’t be complete without a VDub!
How can you use transport at your Wedding
Wedding transport will always have a practical side, but there are so many other ways to use quirky vehicles at your wedding- whether it’s to help you capture the perfect photos or to provide entertainment for your guests!
Here is a list of some of the more unusual ways to incorporate modes of transport into your wedding day!
Hire a VDub or black cab photobooth.
Campers are great for transport, perfect for photos and can even double as the honeymoon suite!
If you have kids at your wedding, you might want to consider hiring a party bus to keep the little ones amused throughout the day!
A vintage bicycle will give you the perfect photos opportunity, double as décor and if you hire one with an ice cream cart, that’s dessert sorted too!
If you have any car enthusiast friends, why not ask them to bring their classic and vintage cars along too, to create your own, mini wedding car show!
Unusual and unique modes of transportation
Now for a look at some slightly more unusual ideas for Wedding Day transportation… which would you choose?!
Horse and Cart- such a romantic option!
Tuk Tuk, just for two!
Motorbike- for a very cool, quirky and fun alternative to wedding day transport.
Helicopter- for a truly luxurious option!
A big red bus- a great option if you’re looking to transport a large number of guests. They’re a classic mode of transport that looks great in the photos. Also a great option for a destination wedding.
Taxi- whether it’s a traditional black cab or a white version, they're a great option and often lower cost that other transport... and you should easily fit your dress in!
Scooters- if you’re city central, why not hop on a scooter to reach your next destination!
The underground- strictly for city goers, but an inexpensive way to beat the city traffic!
Ferries and boats- a great transport option if you’re hosting your wedding at a riverside, canal-side, island or coastal venue! Take a leisurely ride to the next stage of your wedding day (or not, if you choose to travel by speedboat!). Take it to the next level and have your reception on a boat!
Vintage bicycle- perhaps not so easy with a dress, but would make for some fabulously cute photos! If you’re feeling brave, you could even go for a tandem… nothing says “couple” more!
Tractor- the perfect addition to a country wedding! Hitch-up the trailer and you can transport your guests too!
Campers- whether you’re a VDub lover, or just love a quirky ride, campers are a great, nostalgic option for transport and make the perfect backdrop for romantic photos!
Walk!- Not to be underrated, but definitely dependent upon the distance, a stroll to your next venue can give you the perfect time to have a moment together, or to chat with your guests.
Skateboards- for the streetwise, rock’n’roll couple!
Quadbikes- for the more adventurous couples!
School bus- the iconic yellow school bus can add a splash of colour to your day, whilst transporting all of your guests!
Horse back- if you’re a horse lover and regular rider, then why not arrive on your trusty steed!
Vintage & Classic Cars- an all-time favourite, if you’re looking for classic, vintage styling with a little bit of glamour!
Super car- for any modern-day petrol heads!
Top Tips and Things to consider
Here is my list of top tips and things to consider when you’re planning your Wedding Day transport!
Consider the cost of the transport that you looking for- often the more unusual, the higher the price… but not always! Work out how much of your budget you want to allocate and see what options are available.
Don’t forget that if you’re a bride you need your dress to work with your transport if you’ll be using it to go between venues- the length and size of your skirt and general “crease-ability” are considerations when choosing your transport.
How many people do you need to transport? - this will help you think about the size of the vehicle you need and how many journeys they would need to take. Are you transporting all of your Guests? Just your Wedding party? Or just the couple?
Think about the distance between your venues- is it a short distance so the transport can make multiple journeys, or is it a long way, so they’ll only be doing it once?
Book early to make sure your perfect transport is available for your Wedding date.
Ask some questions before you book- be sure that your mileage and fuel are included in the cost and there are no surprise costs on the day. Check if there’s a back-up option, particularly if you’re planning to use a vintage car that can be temperamental at times!
Consider the weather if you go for a convertible mode of transportation… you don’t want to be getting too wet on your wedding day, so have a back-up option with a roof and plenty of umbrellas!
Match your transport to your overall Wedding style and theme to create a cohesive aesthetic.
Consider if you need transport! If you’re in walking distance or all of your day is at a single venue, you could save some money on transport… though you may still want it for the photo ops.!
